The “Aquarium” project was born from a collaboration between the Russian artist Vladislav Shabalin, the internationally recognized American avant-garde musician Diamanda Galàs and the president of Geoworld Group Stefano Piccini.

Inspired by the millions of tons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico after the explosion on the BP Deepwater Horizon oil rig, and consisting of three huge stone slabs with over one hundred “swimming” fossil fish, the triptych replicated the experience of looking through large aquarium windows to view fish of differing size and provenance swimming through living habitats. Instead of living and colorful fish, here we gazed at monochromatic shadows, remnants of a life lost long ago: it was an aquarium of the past.

The penetrating, painful voice of Diamanda accompanied the installation and generated intense, shocking emotions.
